Studying in Groningen, with someone nearby.

Student & Family Support Groningen — part of Stichting Klein en Zelfstandig

Studying abroad brings new experiences: a different language, a new home and everyday things to arrange. Sometimes, it helps to have someone nearby who can listen and offer practical support.

Stichting Klein en Zelfstandig is developing a personal support service for international students in Groningen. Our aim is to provide a familiar local contact for students and reassurance for families living abroad.

How can we help?

Understanding letters and practical information
We can go through Dutch correspondence together, help you prepare for appointments and find the right organisation for your questions.

Support at appointments
Would you feel more comfortable having someone accompany you? We can discuss the support you need and whether we can come along.

Help with everyday matters
We can help you work through practical questions about living in Groningen and contact the appropriate organisation when needed.

Regular personal contact
An agreed check-in gives you time to talk about how things are going, ask questions and work out your next steps.

For parents: a familiar contact near your child

When your son or daughter studies in Groningen while you live abroad, the distance can feel significant. You want them to become independent while knowing they have someone nearby to turn to.

Our aim is to offer that local connection: someone who gets to know the student, listens and provides practical support by arrangement.

The student’s wishes guide our support. We agree with them what information, if any, may be shared with parents.

First, let’s get to know each other.

1. Tell us what you need
Students or parents can contact us. We discuss the questions and arrange an introduction with the student.

2. See whether we are a good fit
Personal support starts with trust. Together, we explore whether our service meets the student’s needs.

3. Make clear arrangements
Before support begins, we agree on the assistance, contact times, availability, costs and any communication with parents.

What does it cost?

Fees for student support are still being finalised. You will receive clear pricing before any paid support begins.

A parent may pay for the service. The support itself is always agreed with the student.

What to expect

We offer practical assistance and personal support by appointment. We do not provide a 24-hour service or emergency response.

Our service does not include medical treatment, psychological counselling or legal advice. Where appropriate, we can help students find a qualified professional.

Student support is a new part of our initiative. During the introduction, we will discuss availability, possible starting dates and the languages in which support can be provided.

Let’s talk about what would help.
